GUIDE 02 · DECIDE
Should I keep or return it?
The purchase already happened. The useful question is whether the item earned a place in your life after the excitement wore off.
Do not decide at the same emotional temperature as the purchase
Sales, urgency, boredom, stress, social influence, and the simple pleasure of something new can all make the moment of purchase unusually persuasive. That does not make the purchase wrong. It means the later decision deserves fresh evidence.
The 24-hour check
After the item arrives, make sure the basics are true before you drift into keeping it by default:
- Is it the correct item, size, condition, and version?
- Does it solve the need you wrote down?
- Is there an immediate defect or mismatch?
- Is the verified return deadline recorded?
The 7-day evidence check
Use the item in the situation it was meant for, when safe and compatible with the merchant’s return conditions. Then answer:
- Did I actually use it?“I plan to” is not the same as evidence from use.
- Did it meet the need?Judge the original problem, not the quality of the marketing.
- How satisfied am I?A simple consistent scale is more useful than a perfect one.
- Would I buy it again today? This removes some of the sunk-cost pressure from the question.
Three honest outcomes
- Keep
- The item solved the need, earned real use, and still feels worth the cost.
- Return
- The evidence is weak enough that recovering the eligible amount is the better next step.
- Not enough evidence
- Schedule one specific use before a safe decision date—earlier than the merchant deadline.
KeepCheck does not make the decision for you. It makes the evidence and remaining time harder to ignore.
